Boardman Community Baseball has awarded its annual scholarships in memory of Chuck Schafer to Alexis Trell and Stephen Higgins. The two recent graduates of Boardman High School received $2,500 each to pursue their higher education goals.

Trell, the daughter of Michael and Angelique Trell, played in BCB for seven years and plans to double major in political science and social work at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. A four-year member of the BHS marching band and pep band, Trell was also involved in French Club, Science Club, and a member of the speech team. She was also named to National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, as well as serving on the Council for Exceptional Children.

Attending to her community proved a big part of Trell's high school years. She volunteered at Beatitude House, the YMCA Triathalon, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Boardman softball camp.

Trell said she hopes to one day run a nonprofit agency like Beatitude House.

Higgins is the son of Stephen and Frances Higgins, and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. He, too, served as part of the Spartan marching band as well as the Boardman wind ensemble. Higgins also performed as a member of the debate team, and was named to National Honor Society and the Hispanic Honor Society. He played baseball in BCB for 11 years and played freshman and JV ball at BHS.

Active in his church, Higgins served on the St. Charles clean-up crew and nativity crew for six years, and also played in the St. Charles Youth Orchestra.

The future aerospace engineer plans to pursue a degree at the University of Cincinnati.

The scholarships are awarded to remember Schafer, architect for Boardman's Fields of Dreams and a champion of Little League baseball. Two $2,500 scholarships are awarded each year in his name to honor Schafer's love for children and passion for the sport.
