Boardman Community Baseball has announced the seventh annual Chuck Schafer Scholarship winners.

Gregory J. Ferenchak and Matthew Manhardt have each been selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship to the school of their choice.
Ferenchak, a 2010 Boardman High School graduate and one of this year's valedictorians, carried a 4.0 GPA and will attend The Ohio State University where he plans to become a medical research scientist. In high school, he was captain of the speech and debate team and Northern Ohio District Student of the Year; tennis team captain and three-year letterman; a member of National Honor Society; co-captain of the Quiz Bowl team; and vice president of the senior class. He played baseball for eight years through BCB.

Manhardt also recently graduated from Boardman High School as one of its valedictorians. He plans to study chemical engineering at Brigham Young University in an effort to help develop alternate fuels and systems for an automobile manufacturer. The National Honor Society member was also president of the Computer Club, a Boardman marching band member; co-captain of the Quiz Bowl team; a peer tutor; and members of the Math, Spanish and Interact clubs. He played eight years of baseball in BCB.

The scholarship is named for Chuck Schafer, an experienced architect who designed the Fields of Dreams on McClurg Road, home to Boardman Community Baseball. Schafer's love for children and passion for Little League baseball led him to design the complex with spectators in mind and spend countless hours volunteering for BCB. The scholarships will be presented by Chuck's son, Rick Schafer, in July during a special ceremony at the Fields of Dreams.

Scholarship applications are accepted through the spring each year. Eligible students include high school seniors who has at least a 2.75 GPA and have participated in a BCB baseball or softball program for at least five years. Applications and information can be found at www.boardmanbaseball.com.
